History Behind The Hat: The Story Of The Magician

The concept of magician as entertainer has its roots deep in human history, but mostly dates back to the sixteenth century. Prior to this time, those who practiced magic claimed to have supernatural powers. When this idea clashed with Christianity in the Western world, new magicians, who entertained audiences, emerged.

Chevalier Joseph Pinetti impressed audiences in the late 1700s with his tricks as an escapist and mentalist. Illusionists emerged in the nineteenth century, using devices to produce elaborate stage shows. One of the first magicians to use live animals was

“Hermann the Great,” who performed disappearing acts and levitation tricks with the animals. Later, famous magicians Siegfried and Roy gained fame in part because of their elaborate show and tigers.

Harry Houdini, perhaps the most well known magician of all time, developed elaborate escape tricks including handcuffs and locked chambers in the early 1900s. His death on Halloween is now also known as “National Magic Day.” Houdini also created grand illusions, some of which magician David Copperfield emulated. During Houdini’s time, Vaudeville acts included and promoted magic tricks.

Over time, the interest in magic has come and gone, although it enjoyed a revival in the 1970s that continues today. Many magicians, similar to other performers, develop a unique style or focus on a particular type of illusion. David Copperfield makes large objects disappear. Lance Burton employs many birds, and Penn and Teller are known for their unique style. Most recently, David Blaine gained fame for his street magic and outrageous stunts.

Magicians of all sorts keep their secrets very secret. The appeal of magic is trying to figure out how magicians accomplish those amazing feats. For those interested in learning magic, many sources are available for the entry-level magician. Some well-known tricks are “out in the open,” and beginning magic kits can help a beginner learn the tricks of the trade. Many books and other resources are available for card tricks as well. Many stores carry magical wares as well.

For those who are serious about the craft, two organizations are devoted entirely to magic, both with headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. The Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians have chapters throughout the world, provide information, and hold conferences. For those
seeking information, these are good places to begin. Your local library is also a good place to find more information, as is the Internet. However, online sources in particular are varied in quality and information, so beginning with one of the organizations may be a better way to begin.

The allure of magic is very real. Throughout the past few decades, magicians have taken magic to a new level, with elaborate stunts and full-out entertainment spectacles. From amazing card tricks to large disappearing acts, magic will likely continue to enthrall audiences worldwide for years to come. It is a performance art unlike any other, and the mystery associated with magic adds a level of intrigue that does not exist with other performance arts.

There are also companies who solely focus on antique car parts. They have a vast collection that can be offered on their web site or store. If you buy it online youll have to pay shipping. But hey, if youre having trouble finding a part, it would be worth it to pay a little more to get what you want.

Another place to check out would be youre local newspapers. You may be lucky and find someone who is selling a part that you need. You might even be able to bargain a little bit, as its not a company selling the part.

It may be a difficult task finding the antique part you need, but with a little research youll have a better chance finding them.

What’s Your Passion?

Okay, you’ve decided you want to make money with Affiliate Marketing. So, you join some affiliate programs and start submitting free ads to newsletters and free advertising classifieds sites. You’re going to make BIG money now — right?

Nope! Sorry! Just sending out a few ads is not going to do it. Not if you want to be a real success.

You must first determine your passion. I mean other than making the money! What is your hobby? What do you know how to do REALLY well? What is your job? Everyone has something that is their own special talent. Find yours.

You probably have more than one thing that you are very interested in and do well. See if you can find five (ten if you’re really ambitious). Write them down in a list. Remember, you are going to be spending a lot of time working with this subject. Make sure you enjoy it!

Go down each item on your list. Start writing a rough outline of everything you know about the topic. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. This is just to give you an idea of how much information is available for a given subject.

Try mind mapping. Write down the main subject of your idea. Draw a circle around it. Now, start thinking of sub-categories that are related to your main category. Draw a line from your main category and end it with a circle. Put the sub-category title inside this circle. Find as many sub-categories (and sub-sub-categories) as you can.

Go through each of your interests with this procedure. Choose the one that you know the most about and that you can write about comfortably.
What if you “think” you don’t know enough about your topic? Then, do some research. Read books and magazines. Do some searches on the Internet. Who knows? You might find an area, a niche, that is just waiting for you to fill it with useful information.

There’s a lot more to affiliate marketing, of course. But the first step is to find your passion. Your “passion” doesn’t have to be making money on the Internet. It can be cooking, sewing, billiards, or whatever. In fact, it’s better if you find a niche that isn’t in the online marketing arena because that’s what nearly everyone else is doing.

Make your topic unique. Make it yours. And make it your passion. It will pay you well.

Do you experience intense heel pain when you take your first step in the morning?

If you do, chances are high that you suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and intense heel pain in the morning is one of the conditions of this illness.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common types of heel pain problems developed in most people. (including myself!) Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory condition caused by excessive wear and tear to the plantar fascia area of a persons foot.

The pains associate with a plantar fasciitis problem is usually felt on the underside of the heel and very often is most intense and painful when you begin your day the time when you stand up from your bed after a night sleep. The pain will also resurface after a period of rest and inactivity.

While women are more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis, it affects many who are overweight and plump. You are also at risk of getting plantar fasciitis if you holds a job that require a lot of walking or standing on hard surface for long period of time.

Resting your feet off the weight of your body is the primary method of plantar fasciitis treatment. Since many foot injuries are a result of muscles and tendon imbalances, stretching some of your muscle groups apart from strengthening can help to alleviate your heel pain problems.

Your stretching exercises should concentrate on the Achilles tendon and calf muscles group. These exercises can be done at the comfort of your home to treat the condition and lessening the chance of recurrence plantar fasciitis pain.

Exercise 1: Bend 1 leg forward in a semi-lunge position and thrust the other leg straight back. Hold the position for a minute and switch leg.

Exercise 2: Stand on a step and balance on the balls of your feet with your heels hanging over the edge. Drop your heels below the step and hold for a minute.

In the more serious cases where conservative treatment cannot help cure your heel pain, your doctor may inject steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (corticosteroid) into your heels or recommend casting your affected foot in a short leg cast. When all else fail a surgery might be needed to release your ligament to improve your condition.

How to do it: Place the front of your knees on the ball and your hands flat on the floor (your whole body should be parallel to the floor). Look down at the floor and lower your face to within a few inches of it, then push back up to the starting position.

To Inflate the Ball

1. Attach the yellow piece to the pump by screwing into place.

2. Before inflating, use a yard stick or tape measure to mark the size of your ball in centimeters (55, 65 or 75) on a wall or floor.

3. Inflate the ball as much as possible, without over inflating.

4. With use, the ball will stretch a bit and can be further inflated.

5. Add more air as necessary, never inflating the ball larger than the centimeters in diameter indicated on the box.

The balance ball rolls around easily, so core strength and balance are required to keep it still. The challenge of keeping the ball still makes the ball an excellent tool to teach stability and rehabilitation. The simplest movement can become a huge challenge when you do it on the ball. Using a ball can give your workout a little more variety and extra challenge. You can try these exercises after your Pilates mat work.

Youve dreamt of it, you planned it, nursed it and dragged it screaming to the grand opening day your business that is. Are you exhausted, and well and truly ready for a rest?

Better not be. Its a sobering fact indeed but over 70% of registered businesses fail before their first anniversary of trading, (Australian Bureau of Statistics Annual Report 2004). And why does this happen?

In the majority of cases, 66%, its problems with cash flow.

Cash flow, or rather the lack of it, seems to be the clear number one enemy of a fledgling business. Firstly what is cash flow? Well simply put lets say you make widgets for sale.

To prepare, there was machinery, a place to put it and some staff to help you operate it. There was insurance to pay, licences to buy, electricity to be put on, and a phone to take all those orders and lots more too you can be assured!

Now youre making your widgets, you had to buy the raw materials, and dispose of the waste. You marketed them, and spent lots of time answering customers questions. Packaging had to be designed and manufactured, and transport had to be organised to get those widgets delivered.

And hey its been three months of hard work, but now you see youve sold over 1000 widgets. Thats well ahead of the business plan and all good news isnt it?

Add up ALL the money youve spent to date. Now have a look at the income? youve received. Its likely that the only revenue youve received is for the first few widgets you sold way back in January. At the same time, all your cash has been spent making those first 1000 widgets. So wheres the income? Has there been a robbery?

No, its the hard cold cash flow devil throwing its weight around. To explain: A large customer ordered 20 widgets from you on the 5th of January. You delivered them on the 7th of January. You sent an invoice for the delivery. On the 4th of February you sent your customer a statement with the invoice listed. In the meantime the customer has ordered a further 20 widgets which you supply in good time. Several other customers also order, and are supplied on similar terms.

Its March now and you call the first customer to check on the progress of your January invoice. The accounts payable lady is very helpful and explains that their terms with you are 60 days. She says to look out for the check in mid April. Nothing untoward, just normal practice.

The penny drops, your income stream will be delayed by at least 80 days! A few nasty bills come in and all of a sudden, youre out of business, unable to pay wages or buy materials.

Thats cash flow. A final thought. A force that can work against you, can alternatively work for you.

PMS! Or the migraines in my life?

Warning: First and foremost, if you are plagued with severe migraines or headaches, you should have a medical examination that will rule out any physiological reality you might have to deal with in order to heal. But, if you have migraines that appear to accompany your PMS or surround your menstrual cycles, I invite you to read on.

Diane spent a third of each month with migraines for which nobody in the medical world advised her to consult in therapy for. Synchronicity had it such that we met at a three-day workshop on art therapy. A very nice woman indeed. We had our meals together and learned about each other’s life and career. On the last day of our workshop, she claims she will probably have to cut it short for her monthly ordeal of migraines is showing its nose. A light throbbing has worked its way up her neck and this is how it normally starts. I can see pain in her eyes and face; I can imagine what an ordeal it must be to have that ghost show up every month. She literally becomes paralyzed for days and all her life is put on a stand still. She is 38 years young. She has 2 young children and a comprehensive husband who helps her as much as he can during those moments.

On the other side of the coin, these migraines have literally stopped her advancement on the work force; everybody knows about her absence from work and compensates for her. Pills help her a bit but they never lead her back to a normal life. The rest of the time she is fine and catches up with her routine. Who would want that life? Nor you or me! Not Diane either. For the last ten years, I have researched PMS and its links to our subconscious. You read well. We all have unknown and unconscious situations that we have far too long left aside, unattended, unlooked and misunderstood. We also have a myriad of limiting beliefs about anything and everything.

So it is about your many physical and emotional symptoms whether medicine calls it PMS or cancer. Did you know that 39% of the women I surveyed have similar symptoms if not every month, more often than they should? Ten years ago when I discovered my first link between PMS and the subconscious, I was totally flabbergasted about my own discovery and results. I kept researching PMS and its links to our subconscious, and migraines came up too often. I offered Diane to look at the possible links and the reasons why her body was reacting as such in her life. She happily consented. After an hour together, she realized how much she had just adopted a pattern that came from her own mother. As we were doing this introspection, she was amazed her pain had not become worse as it would have done in the past. “My mother used to have that same symptom month after month after month all her life. I can see how Mom also had developed a pattern of her own.”

I offered to Diane that we keep in touch and that I help her during the following months. Along the way in our conversation, she also discovered she was a savior with everybody around her. I told her that Mother Teresa had a perfect role cut out for her and she never burned out while alive. Diane, I discovered, has concerns and issues she allowed the world to put in front of her. Like so many women, she has been educated to care and had not granted herself the permission to set healthy limits. Most of us have to learn to say “NO!” at times. She reflected long and hard to realize she did not have to be SO GOOD! Because the one who ends up paying after all, IS HER. And at what price?

Every symptom has its own limiting belief. What is yours? Where does it come from? From whom have you copied it or believed you had no choice but go along with it? All these simple yet profound questions will help you finally connect to your own true self. You may find in the process that it becomes important you take some parts of your life in your own hands. The purpose of a professional development plan is to provide for continuing improvement in teaching, in other student interactions, in the quality of scholarly activity and other service to the university and community. The purpose of evaluation is to provide faculty with new information which will contribute to their teaching abilities. The professional development plan is intended to be supportive of a faculty member’s and their desire for continuing trained growth and academic excellence. This process contributes to various personnel activities and supports the interest of each faculty member to achieve continuing professional growth and to pursue the highest possible level of academic excellence. Project activities included reading and discussing pieces of fiction and history, developing an interdisciplinary humanities curriculum, and video-taping and viewing classroom instruction. It’s helpful when knowledge is shared equally between colleagues within and across different departments; reduced teacher isolation; and the development of an intellectual community for teachers within high schools and universities. However, teachers at different points in their career trajectory were differentially affected by this project.

A good professional development plan is an important part of effective technology use, and only high-quality professional development plans can ensure the maximum benefits from the time and money spent. Educational technology requires educators not only to become familiar with the technology available in their schools but also to totally transform the teacher role. Professional development plans help teachers learn new roles and teaching strategies that will eventually improve their students’ achievement. Professional growth occurs in areas such as effective teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and active involvement in the high school and university community and professional organizations. Faculty scholarship and current knowledge of the discipline, together with a desire to improve pedagogy, are instrumental to good teaching.

Formative evaluation is used to modify or improve a professional development plan. It is conducted throughout the plan to provide feedback and to determine changes to be made during the program to make it more valuable to participating educators. There are a number of ways to collect information for the formative evaluation. Educators can be asked to think about their own goals for personal and professional growth; then, at various times throughout the professional development plan, they can be asked to evaluate the program’s value in meeting those goals. Finally, and most important, is the effect on student learning. Test scores are not the only source of information on this point. Some technology use is reflected in ways not readily seen on test scores, such as increased time spent on writing, better inquiry skills, or more collaboration among students. The ultimate value of a professional development plan is their ability to transform the learning environment. The purpose of evaluating professional development programs is to determine if that transformation is happening and to specify what changes need to be made to ensure that transformation does occur.

What does a sports car.say about you? The cars are fast performance cars that are sleek, fun to drive and give the impression of wealth and freedom. They are expensive and with that in mind it is imperative that they are kept sparkling clean and are protected with a custom car cover when not in use. Cars initially got off to a sluggish start but as time progressed it became clear that the market would grow and as we know today they have become a necessity.

During WWII American soldiers got their first taste of the vehicles that Europe had to offer. These cars had been developed because of the type of roads and scarcity of gasoline overseas and therefore were entirely different from what they had left at home. They were much smaller rough riding and could negotiate the many winding roads more easily. That made them fun to drive. Many soldiers learned to love them and when they returned to America after the war, they yearned to continue the excitement that they had found with many of Europe’s fun to drive open sport automobiles. It was quickly discovered that they were still being offered the status quo from Detroit.

This new found demand for these more sporty type cars spurred a drastic increase in imports of foreign cars to meet the needs of these young veterans. The little MG became the hit of the early post war period. Still conservative Detroit didn’t get the message. It wasn’t until a lot of small specialist companies sprang up in the fifties that Detroit was finally prodded into making an attempt at building a sporty type car. General Motors was the first of the big three to bring out a sports car in 1953 made of the new material fiberglass. By 1955, Ford finally made the big push with an Americanized version of the sports car. That same year, General Motors almost scrapped their entire sports car project, after a bleak production of 590 Corvettes. They made last ditch effort in 1956 by adding a few creature comforts such as roll up windows and a removable hardtop to keep up with the more popular Thunderbird. Just the right amount of creature comforts added to the basic European sports car concept and GM. had a huge success on their hands. So was born the sports car as defined by American standards.

I love watching this show because the whole concept of the bankers offers tempting the players to abandon the game and walk away with some amount of dollars really appeals to me. I play the game in my head, telling the players which offers they should accept, and which they should walk away from. There is an easy way to figure out which offers are good (and which are bad) through a simple financial principle.

Expected value is the principle, and it is one of the basic principles of finance. It allows you to assign a value to something now, knowing that the future is uncertain.

Deal or No Deal: How to decide
The real point of the game is to approximate, at any given point, what the expected value of the suitcase in your hand is.

Step 1: What is the potential gain? At any point in the game, you can determine the potential gain. The highest values left on the board are the maximum amount you can gain from playing. At the start, this would be the $100,000 through $1 million prizes. As the game progresses, and cases are eliminated, the potential gain adjusts downward.

Step 2: What is the probability of that gain? There are 26 spots on the game board. The probability of you having the highest-value case in your possession is simply the number of high-value prizes (greater than $100,000) left on the board divided by the number of cases remaining.

For example: youre playing the game, and there are 9 cases left (plus the one in your hand). The board has the $100,000, $400,000 and $750,000 prizes left, with 7 other smaller prizes also available. The probability that you have the case with one of these three prizes is 10%.

0.10 * $100,000 = $10,000
0.10 * $400,000 = $40,000
0.10 * $750,000 = $75,000

Summing these values, the approximate expected value of your case is $125,000. If the banker offers you anything less, you should say, No deal!

So how does the show keep from losing money on every player? The banker almost never offers anything over the expected value when there are still large amounts on the board. Players compare a paltry $150,000 to the possible million-dollar prize and they cant resist.

* Abundance of supply and demand. Currently, 51 percent of the electricity in the United States is generated by coal power and demand for coal is increasing. In the next 25 years, demand for electricity is expected to increase more than 50 percent. Meeting this demand will require that an average of 65 new power plants be built each year.

Fortunately, the United States contains 274 billion tons of coal that can be used to produce energy for homes and businesses. The coal in the United States could last for 250 years, much longer than either oil or natural gas, and has been proven a recoverable reserve.

* A clean energy source. Coal as a clean energy source? How can that be? Between 1976 and 1993, 38 coal technology projects known as Clean Coal Technology, were conducted. One such technology is a NOX (nitrogen oxide) burner, which is currently used or being installed in three-fourths of power plants that use coal. The result of these

technologies was a decrease in emissions from coal-generated electricity. Between 1980 and 2001, emissions of sulfur dioxide decreased 38 percent. Nitrogen oxide emissions decreased 32 percent and emissions from particulate matter (PM-10), a mixture of solid and liquid particles found in the air, dropped 25 percent.

* Affordability. The cost of electricity allows businesses to remain competitive. Businesses spend less on transportation and generation costs with coal than with natural gas or oil. Coal never needs to be shipped across the whole country because mines are located throughout the United States. Furthermore, the cost of coal-generated electricity is approximately one-fourth that of electricity generated by gas, partly because the cost of coal is more stable than natural gas. As a result, more businesses are turning to coal as a source of power.

Quest Minerals and Mining (OTC BB: QMMG.OB) has acquired and re-opened mines in the southeastern United States that were closed due to a downturn in the price of coal. The company’s focus is on properties that produce quality compliance coal. In addition to selling coal to utilities and industries, Quest is seeking metallurgical coal to be used in steel production.
